Episode 57: J. David Weiss (superyacht designer) – on his wildest requests, why mega-yachts cost so much and his love of watches

J. David Weiss, describes his job as ‘designing silly boats for silly people’ which, if we’re completely honest is a little bit of an understatement. The truth is that Weiss is one of the world’s leading designers of superyachts. And while you might expect this to quickly devolve into chaos (much like any Christmas gathering), Andy, in his festive-est hat, has tried to impose some simple rules. They are as follows. Names are drawn randomly out of a hat, and two hypothetically gifted watches released in 2020. One with a $5K USD budget, and an end game option with a $50K USD budget. Episode 42: Mister Enthusiast/Phillip Toledano on ‘Ruining’ his Tudor, vintage Rolex and being a Bastardo!

Phillip Toledano (AKA Mister Enthusiast) is an eccentric oddball of a human. He’s also a font of creativity, which perhaps shouldn’t be too surprising given that he’s an artist and photographer. His subjects are as diverse as the economic collapse of American business, and United States Navy pilot’s helmets, pictures that manage to tell a story more extraordinary than just what’s in the image. This critical eye is applied to watches too — another gem of Toledano advice is “Don’t look in the same direction as everyone else”, which is why he favours ugly quartz Pateks over the coveted Nautilus. In fact, Toledano seems to take joy in ugly-yet-purposeful objects, like his internet-famous Lancia Delta Integrale, which earned the nickname Bastarda, and eventually became the Viva Bastardo brand.
